广东美术馆是按现代多功能目标规划建设的当代型美术博物馆， 是一个不以营利为目的，为社会和社会发展服务，向公从开放的永久性国家文化事业机构。 本馆担负着对国家艺术珍品的收藏、研究、展示，开展公民素质教育及对外文化交流，推动当代美术事业发展的社会责任和历史使命，具备收藏、研究、陈列展览、教育、交流、服务六大功能。 美术馆建筑面积两万多平方米，馆内有十二个展厅和户外雕塑展示区，可同时或分别举办大型展览和不同题材的展览；具有三百座席、两声道同步传译的现代化多功能学术，可用于国际学术交流和影视放送；还有大面积的教育功能区以及配套的综合服务设施。
