Re. ?/span>Your E-mail of January 4, 2005: Panorama in
Wuhan
Dear Prof. Song,
I thank you very much for your e-mail which arrived in Munich
some days ago.
It was indeed an important trip to Wuhan that on my initiative
some colleagues and I privately did on October 2001 following
the really well organized and highly interesting International
Panorama Conference in Beijing. At that time I was the leader
of the International Panorama Council and the Conference in
China. In Wuhan I promised the director of the Chibi Campaign
Panorama to give him an artistic jugdement on that marvellous
work. He asked me to do it as he had felt our admiration for
it after having seen that great work of art. He said he need
it for a forthcoming publication on the Panorama. Unfortunately
up to now I have not yet kept my promise. I beg his and your
pardon.
Well your letter causes me to make it up.
First of all: congratulations on the high award 2004 for
that enormously scaled panoramic painting in its building
on the top of Tortoise Mountain.
This great circular picture is among the about 40 worldwide
panoramic paintings that we have seen and jugded artisticly
one of the few most remarkable. There are mainly four reasons
for it.
First of all: The visual composition around the canvas of
135 meters in the length and 18 meters in the height not only
fullfills this enormous area really completely without any
hole in the angle of Fine Arts but enlarges in addition also
the outlook over sceneries and environments with outstanding
artistic techniques. It seems to be a landscape painting similar
to the old Dutch manner of depiction. This means that the
atmosphere of nature surroundings and weather moods are painted
in a sensitive kind both of realistic and romantic, that is
spiritual kind of artistic perception.
Second: Just as the sceneries themselves the historical events
in their parts as the burning ships on the river, the fighting
soldiers on the shore, the military headquarters in a tent
under the moonligt are compositionally very well situated
with regard to the perspective within the depicted space and
battle ground as well as from the angle of the public. The
differences between the dramatic fight, the thinktank of headquarters
and the calm evening hour are excellently worked out.
Third: Nowhere we saw a similar well done connection between
free artistic imagination and historic tradition. The Chibi
Battle panoramic painting is the a summit of modern historical
painting we jugded at that time.
Forth: With regard to historical education the Wuhan painting
seems to be higlv valuable.
Dear Prof. Song, this is what I shortly can say. It would
be very helpful to produce a publication on the item of Chibi
painting for schools as well as for cultural and governmental
institutions.
My wife and I wish, your family, all the Chibi artists, all
professors of Luxun Academy of Fine Arts a happy and wealthy
new year.
Yours sincerely
